Playing Catch-up

adminjb

Obama 08 Where did the summer go? It definitely was a busy one starting with one granddaughter’s wedding and finishing with a new granddaughter born to our youngest and her husband. I definitely will try now to be more regular in updates to the mLearnopedia blog.

The Fall “Conference Season” has already begun with a Mobile Learning in Higher Education webinar for Academic Impressions. This month I will be attending two conferences in Italy and back in time for Elliot Masie’s Learning 2008 in Orlando where I am involved in four sessions. Check out the conference schedule and mobile sessions at http://masie.mobi .

Next month is DevLearn for the eLearning Guild in San Jose where I am involved in an all day pre-session workshop and an overview session. This year they are doing an exciting experiment with QR codes .

Looking forward, after the Holidays, I will be doing hands on sessions for ASTD TechKnowledge in Las Vegas in January and coordinating a mobile learning tools Shoot-Out at Training 2009 in Atlanta in February.

If you are attending any of these conferences and want to connect, just let me know.

Speaking of QR codes, Samsung recently announced that they are preloading the ScanLife mobile 2D barcode application on their camera phones. There are also several barcode readers for the iPhone that are easy to install.

For more on the future with tagging, check out the tonshidot demo .

The biggest mobile learning news so far this Fall has been that of the schools that are deploying iPhones to their students. Abilene Christian University has an interesting video available .

This week I had the opportunity to talk with Sun Microsystem's CTO of Sun Learning Services. He posted a video on You Tube this week of their Mobile Learning initiative using the iPhone and iPod Touch. (See below for video)

Training videos are available "just in time, just the right size and exactly what they are looking for." For those without WiFi connectivity content can be preloaded using RSS feeds through iTunes. Corporate security is enforced in the background, only allowing access to those authorized.

Wirenode

adminjb

Thanks to a heads up from Leonard Low, I tried Wirenode for an easy mobile blog. It took less than a minute to set this up. Check the mobile version of this blog out at mlearnopedia.wirenode.mobi.

There are a number of additional tools available to quickly create a mobile site including Mob5.com, Winksite.com and Mobisite Galore.

Wirenode provides the standard text, image, header, list or separator capabilities, but also enables you to easily add widgets. These include widgets for an RSS blog, twitter status, image gallery, message of the day, clock or a message widget for visitors to leave messages. There are also nice promotional widgets that you can use to place on your current clog or website to direct visitors to your mobile site. You can see my current experiment at judyb.wirenode.mobi.

Cell Phone Documentary

adminjb

Indian children with cell phonesI missed it when it was first published on April 3rd, but was pleased to see the excellent Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) documentary on cell phones posted on the web (thanks, Tami). Having lived in Canada for 10 years and seeing the quality of the CBC documentaries, I was excited to see this full documentary. It is nearly 42 minutes, but covers the history, today and tomorrow, mostly life style changes.

At about 27 minutes there is an interesting segment from India were students are learning English on the mobile phone. This in an area where they do not have electricity and very little drinking water.

I loved seeing (around the 21 minute point) the story of Philippe Kahn inventing the camera phone. I had read and heard about it before, but had not seen him talking about it and showing how he did it

In the future section, the coming biometrics capabilities were from Philippe's new company FullPower. See Mobile Devices in Research Lab.

Man on phone in crisisAlthough there are a number of examples of mobile learning and performace support here on this site, the most common question in sessions and from trainers unfamiliar with mobile learning is about examples. For example, "Show me what you can really accomplish (or learn) with one of those small screens."

Unfortunately many of the best examples are proprietary and the owners consider them to be their competitive advantage.

So, while continuing to seek out and post examples, I decided to put together a demo for input and to track the time required to create it. Not a finished project, but a good draft completed in about 3 hours is now available at http://crisisresponse.mobi . Check it out and give us your feedback. We'd love to hear your suggestions for improvement.

ACI iPhone Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, has produced an interesting video of their campus with all students using the iPhone. The 17-minute "Connected: The Movie" video is available on iTunes U or from the ACU site .

"What might a university look like with a fully deployed program of converged devices like the iPhone? Connected is one possible vision. This fictional day-in-the-life account highlights some of the potential benefits in a higher education setting when every student, faculty, and staff member is "connected." Though the applications and functions portrayed in the film are purely speculative, they're based on needs and ideas uncovered by our research - and we've already been making strides to transform this vision of mobile learning (mLearning) into reality."

On their site they also have outlined their case for mLearning, case studies and an initial list of applications. This is definitely a group that "gets it" and one which we will be following. Great job, ACU!

"Free" Mobile Content?

adminjb

I received the following in my email today as a Google alert:

A Consultant in Your Pocket -- AthenaOnline Delivers Free Mobile ...

PR Web (press release), WA - 9 hours ago AthenaOnline announced today that they have released their entire library of short leadership advice videos SmartBytes for use on 3GP cellular phones. ...

When I click on it, I get automatically sent to http://www.myquickcoach.com with no mention of their mobile library being available for free, however the full press release is also available here in PDF. It states "With almost 1,000 videos it is the largest body of management training content currently available for mobile learning. What’s more, Athena announced that the mobile SmartBytes will be made available absolutely free through a special cell phone site that they have set up."

Although it says that the iPhone version is coming, I was able to access some of the videos on my iPhone, but not on my Windows Mobile device.

Note that this appears to be very good content from some known experts which is normally available at $325 per person, per year.

If you have a 3G phone, please go to www.SmartBytes.mobi and advise your experience.

I have to assume that they are giving these away free for now to build mobile learning credibility, but that will change once the demand builds. What do you think?

CES 2008

adminjb

CES logoThe Consumer Electronics Show has just concluded in Las Vegas. As a MASIE Learning Fellow, I covered the show for Learning TRENDS. I was interviewed by Elliott Masie via a PodCast and prepared three reports which you can access at: http://www.masieweb.com/CES2008-coverage. (The second covers more learning related topics.)

The CES show was all about hardware with lots of mobile devices, but for the mlearnopedia readers some of the things that stood out for me included:

  • The progress and status of NFC (Near Field Communications) using the Nokia 6131 NFC, about which I will blog soon
  • Bug Labs "build-it yourself" mobile devices showcased and shipping in March
  • MyRapidMD's ESP which provides critical medical information on your cell phone when you need it most
  • Ease of use of new devices, such as a wearable video camera or a camera with automatic wireless uploads of photos
  • The new Nokia N95 with the preloading of a QR reader

Weekly Summaries

adminjb Carnival logo We started publishing a weekly summary this month, however there are several sites already available doing just this. One we specifically recommend is Carnival of the Mobilists. We plan to cover more topics in our blog, rather than in weekly summaries, and invite you to comment.

For those who might have seen something of interest in the initial weekly entries, you can find the information below:
