Texting in lectures is usually banned - but not in Dr Kevin Linch's class, where he uses new software to encourage more participation from his students.

The teaching fellow and administrative officer for learning and teaching at the University of Leeds types questions on to a giant screen at the front of the class and his third-year history students can reply instantly using their mobile phones.

Dr Linch said: "Texting answers has two benefits - the results come up live on the screen and it encourages responses from some people who might not want to put up their hands."
