Lost amid the debate over what kind of laptop to give to each child in the developing world is a more important question: Is the personal computer the right device for bridging the digital divide? As leader of the engineering team that developed the core technologies still in use in more than 90 percent of the world's personal computers, I feel confident that the PC age is drawing to a close. Connectivity trumps processing power in this new era. The developing world has a unique opportunity to leapfrog previous generations of technology, so why burden it with outdated technology?
