ImageTaking a step that a few professors may view as a bit counterproductive, some U.S. universities are doling out Apple iPhones and iPods to students to provide a direct virtual connection to undergraduates.

University officials say the devices can enhance the learning experience, letting students conduct research while in class, respond to instant polls by professors and receive their homework electronically.

But they also allow students to send messages to each other throughout their classes, a prospect that professors find galling.
