Reports reveal an overwhelming majority of students and faculty at Abilene Christian University deem the first year of the iPod touch and iPhone program a success, while one faculty member’s research showed students in a special chemistry course designed for the devices performed about the same as students in a course that didn’t employ them.

These findings are based on a year of research and surveys during the 2008-2009 school year, which was the first year ACU offered every incoming freshmen and about half the faculty a free Apple handheld mobile device that cost $200-$300 each.

The university has about 4,700 students and tapped the operational funds to hand out about 1,600 devices to freshmen and some faculty and staff last school year.
