As President Barack Obama delivered his State of the Union address to Congress in January, a few dozen Abilene Christian University students, their iPhones in hand, watched intently as it was projected on a large screen in a darkened classroom.

Every few minutes, as Obama spoke, a question pertaining to his speech would slide across the screen.

“Do you believe taxes have really been cut? 1) Yes, 2) No 3) Neutral”

“Are you hopeful the President's words can make a difference? 1) Yes, 2) No 3) Not Interested”

With each question, the students would tap on-screen buttons on their phones.

And so it went for the entire speech, as 50 questions generated by political science faculty scrolled across the screen. The answers provided by the students would serve as fodder for future class assignments.
